More than 400,000 Medicare recipients accidentally billed twice, CMS says – By National Desk Staff (WTAE) / Sept 23 2019
Hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries across the U.S. were incorrectly billed, requiring the federal government to reimburse people, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Approximately 411,000 beneficiaries who directly pay CMS their Medicare premiums through Easy Pay (automated clearing house payments) had their premiums deducted twice from their bank accounts, CMS spokesman Jack Cheevers said in an email.
The Treasury Department is working to reverse the extra charges, and about one in five cases have been fixed, Cheevers said Monday in an email to KCRA-TV.
Beneficiaries may contact 1-800-MEDICARE to check if they have been affected by the issue.
The issue was due to a process error, CMS said.
