    Marshall County official decides to remove Confederate flag from outside of courthouse – By Billy Kobin (Louisville Courier Journal) / April 18 2020

    A Confederate flag that was raised last month outside of the Marshall County courthouse in Western Kentucky was taken down Friday.

    Marshall County Judge-Executive Kevin Neal said in a statement that he made the decision to remove the Confederate “Stars and Bars” flag from outside of the courthouse, thanking “all the people who reached out to me over the past few weeks and expressed their opinions, concerns, support and experiences.”

    Justin Lamb, a Marshall County commissioner, said he had introduced the idea of flying the flag outside the courthouse in Benton to honor “the lives and service of our brave Marshall County ancestors.”

    Kentucky was officially neutral during the Civil War, but Lamb wrote in Facebook posts that Marshall County “was firmly behind the Confederate cause of states’ rights.”

    Installing the flag outside of the courthouse last month, Lamb said, was meant to recognize history and was not meant as a move to symbolize support for slavery or racism, as some critics had claimed the Confederate flag was representing.
