INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — An Independence, Missouri, family is mourning after an afternoon shooting claimed the life of a 2-year-old child on Christmas Eve.
Police were called to a home in the 500 block of South Glenwood Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Friday to investigate shots fired call where a 2-year-old had been struck by a bullet.
At that time, individuals involved reported the incident as a drive-by shooting, and that the suspect in the incident fled the scene and crashed into another vehicle near Truman and Noland roads.
Police later learned that the incident was not, in fact, a drive-by shooting. Instead, the 2-year-old had been handling the gun when it fired.
