    You don’t need an encyclopedic knowledge of either history or of college football to realize that the first shipment of American automobiles from the first assembly line probably included at least one that wound up being driven by a college football player who could in no way afford it.

    Funny how that worked.

    Yes, it was ever thus, so here more than a century later, it was no surprise to read this week that Ohio State’s freshman defensive end Jack Sawyer has a new truck he wouldn’t otherwise be driving, but this time it’s completely legit.

    That’s the most important new aspect of college football as the season begins — the right of athletes to cut third-party business deals for use of their own name, image, and likeness. Gone as of July 1 are the days when college football players took all the risk and drew none of the profits, at least not out in the open.
