Before Burying Sergeant, Chief Slams Senators, NRA – By Rob Quinn (Newser) / Dec 10 2019

Houston’s top cop blasts Cruz, Cornyn for stalling Violence Against Women Act

(Newser) – Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo laid into the National Rifle Association and Texan politicians Monday, minutes before he escorted the body of a slain officer from the medical examiner’s office to a funeral home. Sgt. Christopher Brewster, 32, was shot Saturday after responding to a call about a domestic disturbance. Acevedo slammed Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, for stalling the Violence Against Women Act, the Guardian reports. “I don’t want to see their little smug faces about how much they care about law enforcement when I’m burying a sergeant because they don’t want to piss off the NRA,” the chief said.

The updated act, which was authorized by the House in May, would close the so-called “Boyfriend Loophole,” which allows convicted domestic abusers to own guns as long as they did not live with the victim, ABC13 reports. The NRA argues that the act’s definition of domestic abuse is too broad. “And who killed our sergeant?” Acevedo asked Monday. “A boyfriend abusing his girlfriend. So you’re either here for women and children and our daughters and our sisters and our aunts, or you’re here for the NRA.” He ended his remarks with a message for the senators: “You start caring about cops, children and women and everyday gun violence. And that will be the last thing I say this week because the rest of this week is going to be about Christopher Brewster and his sacrifice.”
