BuzzFeed sends out invites for alternative White House correspondents’ dinner party –

BuzzFeed is pressing forth with its alternative party to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, despite a flurry of cancellations of related festivities hosted by other news outlets.

BuzzFeed is holding its “Red, White, & Banned” party the same night as the April 29 dinner in Washington “for those who plan on skipping this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner but still want to celebrate great journalism,” according to an invitation. “It’s been quite a year of politics and reporting, amirite?” the invite adds. “Free booze for a free press!”

The invitation is among the first distributed for events related to the dinner, which President Trump, who has dubbed the “fake news media” an “enemy of the people,” announced last month he won’t be attending.

The annual journalist- and celeb-filled soiree raises money for journalism scholarships.

Several news organizations — including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Bloomberg — have said they’re canning their annual correspondents’ dinner events. When asked by The New York Times the reason behind his magazine pulling the plug this year on its ultra-exclusive afterparty, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter replied “Trump” and “the fish.”

TBS host Samantha Bee has also announced plans to host an alternative bash, poised to air as a TV special, the same night as the dinner, which she had dubbed the “Not the White House Correspondents’ dinner.”
