CNN analyst Areva Martin mistakenly thought that black Fox Nation host David Webb was white while suggesting he was the beneficiary of “white privilege” during an interview on Webb’s Sirius XM radio program.
The conversation unfolded on Tuesday when Webb, who hosts a show on Sirius XM’s “Patriot” channel, was presenting his argument that qualifications should be more important than a person’s skin color when being considered for a job in journalism, which prompted Martin to accuse him of benefiting from white privilege.
“That’s a whole other long conversation about white privilege, the things that you have the privilege of doing, that people of color don’t have the privilege of,” Martin said.
“How do I have the privilege of white privilege?” a confused Webb asked.
“David, by virtue of being a white male, you have white privilege,” Martin said.
“Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should’ve been better prepped,” Webb interrupted. “I’m black.”
“Okay, then I stand corrected,” Martin responded before apologizing and claiming she was provided with the wrong information before the interview.
“You come with this assumption and you go to white privilege,” Webb added. “That’s actually insulting.”
“It is, and I apologize because my people gave me wrong information,” Martin said.
Martin serves as a legal analyst for CNN and is a co-host of the daytime syndicated talk show “Face the Truth” on CBS.
Webb is also the host of “Reality Check” on Fox Nation, the Fox News streaming service that launched in Nov. 2018.
