Education bill would require Utah teachers to post syllabus, teaching materials online – By Chris Jones (KUTVT) / January 25, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KUTV) — A controversial new bill was introduced at the Utah State Legislature late Tuesday afternoon, and it already has many in education buzzing.

House Bill 234, sponsored by Rep. Jordan Teuscher (R-South Jordan), requires teachers to post their curricula, class syllabi, and associated learning materials for use for student instruction. The bill comes just a day after Sen. Lincoln Fillmore (R-South Jordan) made changes to a Senate bill that has similar requirements.

Fillmore’s bill would require school districts to post many of their teaching items online for 30 days and allow for parents to review them and possibly object to anything they find. However, it would not require teachers to post some of the materials, such as a poem they read in class, or a news article on a current news event. However, his bill would have districts set up a process to review those materials.
