Legendary NASA engineer and author Homer Hickham has been driven from social media after trying to correct a NASA intern who also happened to be a “furry.”
In an exchange late last week, Hickham, who serves on the National Space Council which oversees NASA, popped in to a conversation to chide another Twitter user for her strong language. When she told him to “suck my d*ck and balls, I’m working at NASA,” Hickham politely reminded her who precisely who he is.

“Naomi” was “instantly fired” from her internship, but Hickham actually raced to her defense, pointing out in a blog post published after the incident that he was merely being collegial and had nothing to do with “Naomi’s” employment (or sudden lack thereof). In fact, Hickham said, he was trying to get Naomi her internship back, or at least help her find something of equal prestige.
huh, dang… :/ here’s a screenshot of what it used to be though pic.twitter.com/OebJtLxPhB

But that wasn’t enough. Naomi is allegedly a “furry,” or a member of a subculture that dons detailed, lifelike animal ears, tails, and even, in some cases, full costumes, to interact. Most “furries” take on alter egos as “animals with human personalities and characteristics.” The community is tight knit, and an insult to Naomi was apparently an insult to furries.
In what Twitchy cleverly titled a “Furry fury,” members of Naomi’s “fur community” lashed out at Hickham and drove him from Twitter, and then from the internet.
NASA engineer Homer Hickam deactivated his Twitter after a sustained harassment campaign from members of the furry community following a brief interaction with a would-be NASA intern (a furry) who spewed profanity at him.

Hickham has since erased his blog, where he defended the furry he was accused of unfairly maligning.
