How do you build when the skill nor the facility ain’t there? That’s pretty much the question at hand in the latest Reuters article by Mike Stone titled “Missing from Trump’s grand Navy plan: skilled workers to build the fleet” linked to this post.

It’s one of many questions about the great Navy buildup, even though the Navy has been building new ships, albeit slowly then those being decommissioned. The USS Zumwalt began life in 2012, costing around $4 billion to complete and has had engineering problems such as water seeping into the bearing of the electrical motors since it launched in 2016.

Yes we need to modernize our military, but boats just don’t float in a few months, especially with today’s tech. Skilled workers have been on the decline for decades as life switched to office cubicle farms or robotic needs.

But I’m still in the mindset of once being told we need a smaller, sleeker, faster military and then having SecDef Dick Cheney slap the Pentagon with a 25% military reduction over 5 years beginning in 1990 and how so many fell in love with the plan only to knock POTUS Bubbha Clinton for the military decline.

The skilled worker is not there to build it and military membership is not there to serve aboard it.
