Jamal Khashoggi murder: Five suspects may face death penalty – By Sky News newsroom (news.sky.com) / Nov 15 2018

Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor has said he is seeking the death penalty for five suspects charged with the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Saud al-Mojeb told a news conference in Riyadh on Thursday that Khashoggi’s killers had set in motion plans for the killing on 29 September, three days before he was killed inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul.

The prosecutor said the highest-level official behind the killing is Saudi former deputy intelligence chief Ahmad al-Assiri – who has been fired for ordering the journalist’s return.

He added that there are 21 people now in custody, with 11 indicted and referred to trial.

Mr al-Mojeb also exonerated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the murder of Khashoggi and accused two senior officials of giving the orders.

A spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office denied Prince Mohammed had any knowledge of the killing in response to a journalist’s question.

The spokesman said Mr al-Assiri had given an order to force Khashoggi home and that “the head of the negotiating team” that flew to Istanbul had ordered his murder.
