McCarthy: Democrats Are Trying to Dictate What You Can Read and Watch – By Melanie Arter (CNS News) / Feb 25 2021
(CNSNews.com) – House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a speech on the House floor on Wednesday warned that Democrats are trying to censor what Americans can read and watch, citing the efforts of two congressmen who sent letters to cable companies to pressure them to drop conservative TV networks.
McCarthy pointed to a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing titled, “Fanning the Flames: Disinformation and Extremism in the Media,” which was held Wednesday and featured panelists Soledad O’Brien, anchor of Matter of Fact, George Washington University Law School Professor Jonathan Turley among others.
The minority leader said that the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology’s hearing will focus on “broadcasters’ and cable news’ devotion to journalistic integrity,” and it “should concern every American.”
“It has never been Congress’s role to define and enforce journalistic standards,” McCarthy said. “The 1st Amendment expresses prohibits the government from controlling what the press says, but Democrats are trying to give themselves the power to dictate what you can read and watch in your own home, and their assault on free speech goes beyond today’s disgraceful hearing.”
