Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said his department is “familiar” with the suspected Colorado mass shooter who fired “well over 100 rounds” and killed a deputy sheriff and wounded four other deputies and two civilians in suburban Denver early Sunday.

The suspect was killed by police during the shootout, and officers are awaiting positive identification from the county coroner.

Officers responded to a “domestic disturbance” call at around 5:15 a.m. local time. Spurlock said the suspect was making “a ton of noise.”

“Once they were there they were met with gunfire form the suspect,” Spurlock said at a news conference. “Four officers were injured and one officer was killed in the line of duty.”

“There were well over 100 rounds fired in this engagement, 100 rounds from the suspect,” he added.

Deputy Zackari Parrish, a 29-year-old father of two, was killed. The four injured officers were identified as Deputy Mike Doyle, 28; Deputy Taylor Davis, 30; Deputy Jeff Pelle, 32; and Castle Rock Police Department Officer Tom O’Donnell.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Zackari,” said Spurlock, adding that it was “very difficult today to see Zack for the last time.”

PB/TK – If the police department was familiar with the shooter, should they not have had arrive with heightened caution knowing his background and that any ‘domestic disturbance’ at 500am is not going to be a good thing? However, in the end no matter how much precaution those in BLUE may have taken, one officer death is too much
