Ted Cruz booed by Texas crowd for saying more police needed to make schools safer – By Ariana Garcia (Houston Chronicle) / Sept 26, 2022
The junior senator was met with boos after claiming that the Uvalde gunman was successful because an officer wasn’t there to stop him from entering the school.
Sen. Ted Cruz spoke out against the passage of gun reform measures during a panel at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday and the audience was not having it. The junior senator was met with boos and jeers after saying that the best way to stop mass shootings in schools is to increase law enforcement’s presence on campuses.
“Whenever you have a mass murder… you have Democrats in Washington, the step they immediately go to is ‘We need to take away firearms from law-abiding citizens,'” Cruz said, prompting some applause from the audience. “OK, you can clap for that except for the minor problem that it doesn’t work. If the objective is to stop these crimes, gun control is singularly ineffective.”
.@tedcruz says one of the most effective ways to prevent mass shootings is to "enhance security at vulnerable targets" and add more police in schools.
But experts say more law enforcement on campuses doesn’t necessarily make schools safer. https://t.co/HYwikriccm #TribFest22 pic.twitter.com/Y4VWyh0M3q
