Long-held tensions between neighbors Israel and Lebanon might be reaching their breaking point, as recent casualties along both sides of the border are leading some to worry that the war raging in Gaza may spread to other parts of the Middle East.
On Jan. 16, Israel launched a rapid air assault on Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon’s Suluki Valley, an attack Lebanese security sources described to Reuters as the “densest bombardment of a single location” since hostilities along the border broke out three months ago. Meanwhile, Hezbollah acknowledged launching rockets at Israeli forces.
The recent exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese military group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and other countries, follow weeks of increased violence and heightened tensions along the border. On Jan. 9, Hezbollah attacked an Israeli army base with explosive drones deployed from Lebanon. The assault appeared to be a response to Israel killing Wissam Tawil, a top Hezbollah commander, in a south Lebanon strike a day prior.
