1099 The Crusaders launch their final assault on Jerusalem.

1568 Dean of St. Paul’s London, Alexander Nowell perfects a way to bottle beer

1585 A group of 108 English colonists, led by Sir Richard Grenville, reaches Roanoke Island, North Carolina.

1643 In England, the Roundheads, led by Sir William Waller, are defeated by Royalist troops under Lord Wilmot in the Battle of Roundway Down.

1754 George Washington surrenders Fort Necessity to the French, leaving them in control of the Ohio Valley.

1787 Congress, under the Articles of Confederation, enacts the Northwest Ordinance, establishing rules for governing the Northwest Territory, for admitting new states to the Union and limiting the expansion of slavery.

1793 French revolutionary Jean Paul Marat was stabbed to death in his bath by royalist sympathizer Charlotte Corday.

1832 Henry Schoolcraft discovers the source of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

1836 John Ruggles received patent #1 from the U.S. Patent Office for a traction wheel used in locomotive steam engines. All 9,957 previous patents were not numbered.

1954 In Geneva, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China and France reach an accord on Indochina, dividing Vietnam into two countries, North and South, along the 17th parallel.

1966 A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada founds the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Hare Krishna movement) in New York City

1970 FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover named the Black Panther party the most dangerous terrorist group in existence today.

1977 Kinney, Minnesota declares its secession from the U.S. Frustrated by its failing water system, Kinney, Minnesota declared the creation of the Republic of Kinney and sent a letter of secession to the U.S. Secretary of State.

1977 Ethiopian-Somali War begins The Somali National Army invaded the disputed Ogaden region between Somalia and Ethiopia. The war lasted for 9 months and ended with a Somalian retreat

1985 Live Aid benefit concert Held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia, the concert raised millions in benefit of those affected by famine in Ethiopia. Over a billion people tuned in around the world to watch the show.

1998 As Russia continues it’s economic problems the International Monetary Fund’s has agreed to give Russia a $22bn loan to help stabilize it’s economy.

2001 The code red (WORM) virus is first seen on the Internet. The worm is designed to attack web sites running on Microsoft’s IIS web server

2003 Iraq’s interim governing council was inaugurated.

2012 A cargo ship carrying humanitarian aid supplies like food and medicine has traveled from Miami to Havana, Cuba for the first time in fifty years.
