    1223 In France, Louis VIII succeeds his father, Philip Augustus.

    1430 Joan of Arc, taken prisoner by the Burgundians in May, is handed over to Pierre Cauchon, the bishop of Beauvais.

    1536 France and Portugal sign the Treaty of Lyons, aligning themselves against Spain.

    1789 The Bastille, a fortress in Paris used to hold political prisoners, is stormed by a mob.

    1798 US Sedition Act prohibits “false, scandalous & malicious” writing against government

    1850 1st public demonstration of ice made by refrigeration by Florida physician John Gorrie

    1868 Alvin J. Fellows patented the tape measure.

    1921 In one of the most controversial cases in U.S. history, anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted of two murders and sentenced to death.

    1933 Nazi Germany promulgates the Law for the Protection of Hereditary Health–the beginning of the Euthanasia program.

    1933 All non-Nazi parties are banned in Germany

    1951 The George Washington Carver National Monument in Joplin, Missouri becomes the first national park honoring an African American.

    1958 A military coup overthrew the monarchy in Iraq, killing King Faisal II. General Abdul Karim Kassem becomes Iraq’s leader.

    1966 In one of the worst murder cases to date 8 student nurses are brutally murdered by Richard Speck at their group residence in Chicago, Illinois.

    1978 Public Servants today began a strike in 3 major US Cities leaving cities with no police on the streets, no fire protection and most other public service employees on strike . The cities were Cleveland, Louisville and Philadelphia. Each city had National Guardsman standing by.

    1998 Los Angeles sued 15 tobacco companies for $2.5 billion over the dangers of secondhand smoke.

    2003 Jerry Springer officially filed papers to run for the U.S. Senate from Ohio.

    2006 Israel continued its attacks on the country of Lebanon after the militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers. Over fifty people, most of whom were civilians, were killed in the attacks on this day. The conflict between Israel and Lebanon lasted until August 14th of 2006.

    2007 North Korea closed the first of many nuclear reactors as specified by a fuel deal made in exchange for fuel. The International Atomic Energy Agency monitored and helped North Korea shut down this first reactor and in exchange North Korea received 6,200 tons of heavy fuel, the first shipment in a 1 million ton deal. The closings are put on hold in 2008 as tensions between North Korea and the United States heighten.

    2008 Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae who own or guarantee about $5.3 trillion worth of home loans about half of all US mortgages have seen a loss of confidence my the market due to the mortgage foreclosure increase and the drop in property values in the United States.
