    1016 Cnut the Great [Canute], King of Denmark, claims the English throne after the death of Edmund ‘Ironside’

    1487 The first German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), is promulgated in Munich by Albert IV, Duke of Bavaria stating beer should be brewed from only three ingredients – water, malt and hops

    1700 8,000 Swedish troops under King Charles XII defeated an army of at least 50,000 Russians at the Battle of Narva. King Charles XII died on this day.

    1782 The British sign a preliminary agreement in Paris, recognizing American independence.

    1803 Spain cedes her claims to Louisiana Territory to France

     1804 U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase went on trial accused of political bias. He was later acquitted by the U.S. Senate.

    1838 Mexico declares war on France.

    1861 The British Parliament sends to Queen Victoria an ultimatum for the United States, demanding the release of two Confederate diplomats who were seized on the British ship Trent.

    1866 Work begins on 1st US underwater highway tunnel, Chicago

    1906 George Parker Bidder, President of the Marine Biological Association (UK) released a glass bottle with a message into the North Sea. The bottle spent 108 years and 38 days at sea before it was found on the shores of Germany in 2015.

    1906 President Theodore Roosevelt publicly denounces segregation of Japanese schoolchildren in San Francisco.

    1939 The 4-month long war between Finland and the Soviet Union began after the USSR invaded Finland and bombed Helsinki.

    1935 Non-belief in Nazism is proclaimed grounds for divorce in Germany

    Also known as the Civil War in Mandatory Palestine, the conflict began the day after the United Nations General Assembly voted on a resolution that provided a partition plan for Palestine.

    1950 President Truman declares that the United States will use the A-bomb to get peace in Korea.

    1956 The United States offers emergency oil to Europe to counter the Arab ban.

    1974 The fossilized remains of a female human ancestor named Lucy (after the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) were found in Ethiopia.

    1974 Pioneer II sends photos back to NASA as it nears Jupiter.

    1979 Pope John Paul II becomes the first pope in 1,000 years to attend an Orthodox mass.

    1981 Representatives of the US and USSR meet in Geneva, Switzerland, to begin negotiations on reducing the number of intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe.

    1986 “Time” magazine published an interview with U.S. President Reagan. In the article, Reagan described fired national security staffer Oliver North as a “national hero.”

    1993 US President Bill Clinton signs the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (better known as the Brady Bill) into law.
