‘Utter madness’: Stunned British reporter blasts Theresa May as latest Brexit deal falls apart – By Brendan Skwire (Raw Story) / March 12 2019
Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hasan blasted British Prime Minister Theresa May shortly after Parliament rejected her Brexit deal Tuesday, telling MSNBC’s Ali Velshi that the situation was insane.
“It’s madness, isn’t it?” Hasan said. “One of the richest countries in the history of the world, my country, the United Kingdom, stockpiling medicines and talking about delays to fresh produce, for a no deal Brexit.”
“To be clear, this has been going on for two years,” he added. “Two years later, we are now 17 days away from March 29th, 11:00 PM, Friday night, Britain crashes out of the European Union without a deal. This is crazy. There is nothing like it in my lifetime.”
“Europe’s been tearing apart the Conservative Party for decades, but I don’t think anyone thought it would come to this,” Hasan continued, and laid down a litany of Prime Minister May’s failures.
“She called an election in 2017 to try to help her negotiating position, she lost her majority. She lost her senior cabinet ministers like Boris Johnson along the way,” Hasan said. “In January she lost by the biggest margin of any government in modern British democratic history trying to get this deal passed. She tried again now, plan B was to try again, lost again.”
He added, nobody in Conservative Party or the opposition had a plan C, and that anyone who expected a neat solution was delusional.
“There’s this idea that something will happen in the eleventh hour,” he said. “There are a lot of Brits who think in their heads, ‘well, the European Union will do something.’”
Hasan added that he doubted that an extension would help either.
“All it does is carry on arguing for another two months, he said. “I don’t see how it gets resolved.”
