It’s been more than two weeks since the Fresno Unified School District started an investigation into the actions of a vice principal who appeared in an online video in which he called the people recording him “Section 8 people” and “ghetto girls.” While the district has yet to say anything publicly, calls for the vice principal’s firing are growing.

Multiple news outlets reported that Fred Veenendaal, a vice principal at Sunnyside High School, was placed on leave while the investigation plays out. In a 27-second video posted on TikTok last month, Veenendaal can be seen speaking on the phone with someone while standing in a parking space outside a building. He appears to be in an argument with another person — who is filming the video — and can be heard telling the person on the phone, “Officer, you got three girls here. Three Section 8 people. Ghetto girls.”

At the time, it was unclear what had happened before the person began filming or who Veenendaal was referring to. However, at a meeting of the district’s board of trustees last week, the person who filmed the video — identified as Bullard High School student Kyra Schrubb — told local outlet KSEE that she believes Veenendaal was racial profiling her and her friends, who are Black.
