Texas just got closer to passing its own ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill – By Michael Murney (Houston Chronicle) / May 23, 2023
The Texas Senate approved a bill mirroring Florida’s restriction on classroom discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Texas just took a significant step towards passing its own version of a “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The legislation would essentially ban any discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in school classrooms from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, mirroring a law passed in Florida in March 2022.
The Texas Senate voted 19-12 in favor of Senate Bill 890 during a preliminary vote on Monday following revisions from the Senate’s education committee, according to The Texas Tribune’s Alex Nguyen.
In its original form, SB 890 focused on Texas school districts’ procedures for responding to complaints and passed out of the House unanimously in late April. Texas Republicans revised the bill to add restrictions on classroom lessons and general campus activities just last week, according to the Tribune’s Nguyen.
