Texas Republicans want to ‘reclaim the rainbow’ from LGBTQ community – By Ariana Garcia (Chron) / June 2, 2023
The rainbow flag has been a symbol of LGBTQ pride for 45 years, but Texas Republicans want to change that.
June is Pride Month, so you’ll be seeing rainbow flags everywhere, from reimagined company logos to Pride-themed collections at local retailers, and it looks like Texas Republicans want to get in on the action. To mark the start of June, the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) has vowed to take back the rainbow. For 45 years, the rainbow flag has been the most recognized international symbol for LGBTQ pride since it first debuted at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade celebration in 1978. But Republicans want to change that.
On Thursday, @TexasGOP—the official Twitter account of the RPT— encouraged its followers to purchase T-shirts emblazoned with the words “reclaim the rainbow,” a reference to Genesis 9:13-15, and the symbol of the Republican party in honor of Pride Month.
The Bible passage referenced on the shirts reads: “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind.” Initially selling for $30, the shirts are now apparently on sale for $23, for a limited time.
