A new poll shows that California is on track to give Donald Trump a potentially insurmountable advantage in the Republican primary for president.
The latest Berkeley IGS Poll, released Wednesday, shows that Trump is by far the top choice among Republicans deemed likely to vote in the state’s presidential primary in March. More than half of respondents — 55% — said they would vote for Trump in California’s primary election, up from 44% in May. That 55% figure is significant because of a recent rule change the state’s Republican Party made.
GOP officials in California decided in July that any candidate who wins more that 50% of the vote in the state’s presidential primary will win all of the party’s 169 delegates, the highest amount of delegates awarded by a single state. If Trump performs well in the early primary contests before California’s primary on March 5, a win in the Golden State could cement his lead over the other high-profile candidates in the race.
