Man arrested after reportedly driving into people outside London’s Natural History Museum – By Jake Kanter (businessinsider.com) / Oct 7 2017
LONDON — A number of people were injured after a car reportedly drove into pedestrians outside London’s Natural History Museum, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Police said a man was arrested after the “collision” at 2.21 p.m. local time (BST) on Saturday. Witnesses said the road in west London was closed off, while pedestrians and local businesses were evacuated
The police have not commented on the nature of the collision, but witnesses reported a car hitting pedestrians. There is no suggestion at this stage that the incident was terror-related, but British Prime Minister Theresa May is being kept informed.
In a statement, the Met said: “Police were called at 14.21 on Saturday, 7 October to reports of a collision in Exhibition Road, South Kensington.
“It is believed that a number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers are on scene, and the London Ambulance Service have been called.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan added: “Details are still emerging and I have spoken with and am in close contact with Assistant Met Commissioner Mark Rowley and our other emergency services. Police have asked people to avoid the area while their inquiries continue.”
Witness footage appears to show a man being held on the ground by three others following the collision.
The incident took place in one of London’s most popular tourist destinations.
The area of South Kensington in which the collision occurred is home to a number of museums, including the Natural History and Science Museum. The Royal Albert Hall, which has heavy bollards erected outside its entrance, is also in the area.
TV footage shows armed police on the scene. Sky News said the police response to the incident was similar to that of the London Bridge terror attack in June, during which eight people were killed when a van drove into pedestrians and three men went on a stabbing spree.
The current UK terror threat level is severe, which means an attack is “highly likely.”
