1948 – Israel declared to be an independent state and a provisional government is established. Immediately after the declaration, Israel was attacked by the neighboring Arab states.

1097 – Siege of Nicaea began during the first Crusade – Turkey

1264 – King Henry III was captured by his brother in law Simon deMontfort at the Battle of Lewes in France.

1907 – Sweden adopts universal suffrage for elections to its lower house and proportional representation for both houses

1913 – The Rockefeller Foundation was created by John D. Rockefeller with a gift of $100,000,000.

1921 – Mussolini’s fascists obtains 29 parliament seats

1931 – Ådalen shootings: five people are killed in Ådalen, Sweden, as soldiers open fire on an unarmed trade union demonstration

1932 – “We Want Beer!” parade in New York

1935 – The Philippines ratified an independence agreement.

1939 – Lina Medina becomes the world’s youngest confirmed mother in medical history at the age of five.

1940 – During World War II, the Netherlands surrendered to Nazi Germany.

1942 – The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) was established by an act of the U.S. Congress.

1943 – Australian Hospital Ship Centaur sunk by a Japanese submarine off the south Queensland coast The ship was crewed by members of the Australian merchant navy and only 64 of the 333 on board survived

1944 – General Rommel, Speidel & von Stulpnagel attempt to assassinate Hitler

1945 – Kamikaze-Zero strikes US aircraft carrier Enterprise

1946 – The House of Commons passes the Canadian Citizenship Act; first nationality statute in Canada to define its people as Canadians

1948 – Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the independent State of Israel as British rule in Palestine came to an end.

1955 – The Warsaw Pact, a Easter European mutual-defense treaty, was signed in Poland by eight communist bloc countries including the Soviet Union. The pact was dissoved in 1991.

1961 – Busses carrying Freedom Riders was bombed and burned in Anniston and Birmingham, Alabama.

1962 – Ex-president of Yugoslavia Milovan Djilas sentenced to 5 years in jail

1969 – Abortion & contraception legalized in Canada

1970 – Mississippi state police kill two black students at Jackson State University.

1973 – Skylab One was launched into orbit around Earth as the first U.S. manned space station.

1975 – U.S. forces raided the Cambodian island of Koh Tang and recaptured the American merchant ship Mayaguez. All 40 crew members were released safely by Cambodia. About 40 U.S. servicemen were killed in the military operation.

1980 – U.S. President Carter inaugurated the Department of Health and Human Services.

1981 – The Bank of Canada raises lending rate to further record high of 18.98%.

1985 – Ray Kroc’s first McDonald’s restaurant became the first fast-food business museum. It is located in Des Plaines, Illinois.

1988 – In the Andean village of Cayara, Peru’s military was involved in a massacre of at least 26 peasants.

1991 – Angry truckers blockade Parliament Hill; say they can’t compete due to higher Canadian taxes than US

1992 – Former Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev addressed members of the U.S. Congress, appealing to them to pass a bill to aid the people of the former Soviet Union.

1997 – Baseball’s Executive Council suspends NY Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for his suing other team owners

1998 – The Associated Press marked its 150th anniversary.

1999 – North Korea returned the remains of six U.S. soldiers that had been killed during the Korean War.

2001 – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that there was no exception in federal law for people to use marijuana for medical purposes.

2004 – The Constitutional Court of South Korea overturns the impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun.

2008 – The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species due to loss of Arctic sea ice.

2012 – 1,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons agree to end mass hunger strike

2018 – Indian politician Shashi Tharoor is charged by police with driving his wife to commit suicide

2019 – Huge protests closes schools in Kashmir after the rape of a three-year-old girl

2020 – Former pandemic agency head Rick Bright testifies to a US House Committee “without better planning, 2020 could be the darkest winter in modern history”

2022 – 18-year-old gunman kills 10 people and wounds three at a Tops supermarket in east Buffalo, New York, in a racially motivating attack
