In a phone call Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed how to best neutralize the North Korean nuclear threat, according to the Kremlin in a conference call Friday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders also discussed how to open the dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toward denuclearization – a conversation the isolated nation’s leader has seemingly scoffed at – as well as how to establish better communication between the U.S. and Russian leaders.
The Kremlin initially announced the phone conversation in a statement, saying the call came “at the initiative of the American side,” and the two leaders discussed “current issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as the situation in crisis areas in the world, primarily the Korean nuclear issue.”
Meanwhile, the White House said in a statement Thursday that Trump used the call to thank Putin for “for acknowledging America’s strong economic performance in his annual press conference” and to talk about how to resolve “the very dangerous situation in North Korea.”
The phone call occurred amid special counsel Robert Mueller’s continuous investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s administration and Russia during the 2016 presidential election, which both parties continue to deny.
