“He’s comfortable, content, fighting – the three words I’ve used all the way through this case. He’s more comfortable now he’s got no tube and he’s breathing for himself,” Tom Evans, the father of 23 month-old, critically-ill Alfie Evans said Tuesday.
Evans has been fighting a legal battle against Britain’s socialized medicine system, which ordered Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to take Alfie off live support and has refused to allow Alfie’s parents to take the boy to Italy for potentially life-saving treatment.
“I don’t want to be big-headed and say ‘I told you so’ but we had to fight hard against this to say ‘remove the drugs, remove the machine’ and he’s doing it now,” Evans told the Liverpool Echo Tuesday. “He ain’t showing no sign of suffering or that he needs support or anything.”
“He’s stable, he’s breathing, he’s receiving water and some treatment and he’s receiving his oxygen which is the most important thing,” Evans said.
Evans says he was “absolutely heartbroken” by the judge’s ruling Tuesday that Alfie’s parents couldn’t take him to Rome for treatment:
“I was absolutely heartbroken. I can’t believe Justice Hayden said to us after everything Alfie’s doing that it’s still not in his best interests.”
“If anything it’s the utmost reasonable and reliable plan for Alfie right now because he’s got nothing else so it is in his best interests definitely.”
“He’s given it his all. I’ve had no sleep in two or three days, all off adrenaline.”
On Wednesday, Evans’ legal team will appear in court to appeal Tuesday’s ruling.
“Get him to Italy and we’ll come back with him in a better condition than he’s in now and I know they’re not going to do that,” Evans said, vowing to fight for the opportunity to try to save Alfie:
“They’re not going to give him that chance. So I’m going to have to fight, legally, for that chance. I will all the way.”
