NYC Muslim cab driver charged with hate crime over beating of Jewish man – By OAN Newsroom (oann.com) / Oct 22 2018
A Muslim cab driver accused of brutally attacking a Jewish man in New York City is charged with a hate crime.
According to reports, the additional charge was handed down to Farrukh Afzal after repeated requests from the Jewish community.
Last week’s attack was caught on camera and shows the 37-year-old chasing the victim across an intersection before beating him.
The victim said he fought for his life. Though he only suffered minor bruises, he said the trauma of being attacked by someone who seemingly wanted revenge will stay with him forever.
Hate crimes against Jews have reportedly been on the rise.
“We cannot allow anti-Semitic, or assaults on Jews, or assaults on any minority group to become normalized in this city,” stated Evan Bernstein, New York Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League. “We’ve seen a dramatic up tick in anti-Semitism over the last three years — last year alone in New York State we saw a 90-percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents.”
It remains unclear what provoked the attack, but the victim maintains Afzal yelled the words “Allah” and “Israel.”
The cab driver is also being charged with assault, harassment and menacing.
