Donnelly becomes third Senate Democrat to support Neil Gorsuch – By April 2, 2017
WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Indiana, announced Sunday he will support Neil Gorsuch, becoming the third Democratic senator to back the U.S. Supreme Court nominee.
Donnelly joins West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin and North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp as the Senate looks to vote on President Donald Trump’s nominee later this week. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, has threatened that Democrats plan to filibuster Gorsuch’s nomination, meaning the nominee would need 60 votes — five more than he now has — to be confirmed. If Democrats filibuster, Republicans are considering changing the rules to confirm Gorsuch anyway.
“I have said consistently that part of my job is to carefully review, debate, and vote on judicial nominations, including nominees to the Supreme Court,” Donnelly said in a statment. “It is my obligation as senator to consider the qualifications of each nominee that comes to the Senate floor to determine if he or she can faithfully serve on our nation’s highest court. I take this responsibility very seriously
