Michael Cohen Gets a Subpoena – By Newser Editors and Wire Services (Newser) / Jan 24 2019
Attorney says Cohen will appear before Senate Intelligence Committee
(Newser) – A Senate committee has subpoenaed President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, a day after Cohen postponed his public testimony to a House committee. Word of the subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee comes from one of Cohen’s lawyers, Lanny Davis, per the AP. He says Cohen will honor the subpoena, per Politico, “but what he will do as a result … is a legal issue that would come down to reasonable discussions.” The New York Times reports Cohen’s third appearance in front of the panel investigating Russian election interference in the 2016 election campaign “will almost certainly be behind closed doors.” The committee generally has held its Russia-related hearings in private.
Cohen delayed his Feb. 7 appearance before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on the advice of his defense team because Cohen is still cooperating in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Davis also said President Trump has threatened Cohen’s family. In a Thursday tweet, Trump called Cohen a “bad lawyer” and appeared to refer to Davis as an ally of Hillary Clinton, per the Times. Cohen has pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about his role in a Trump business proposal in Russia considered during the 2016 campaign. He’s set to begin a three-year prison sentence next month. (The House Oversight Committee is considering a Cohen subpoena.)
