‘Lied’: Kellyanne Conway blasts Washington Examiner and denies she threatened reporter – By John Gage (Washington Examiner) / Oct 24 2019
Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway issued a four-part statement after the Washington Examiner released audio of a phone call in which she mocked and threatened reporter Caitlin Yilek for mentioning her husband, George Conway, in a story.
“The false tweet below makes my point about how dangerous it is to characterize someone else’s intentions, feelings, or state of mind, even if it’s for clicks and kicks,” Conway tweeted Thursday evening. With a document that began, “Here are the facts,” Conway explained her side of the story.
She explained, first of all, that the things she said in the phone call were things she has said on the record before and maintained that the phone call was never off the record. She also contested the characterization that she “threatened” Yilek, quoting herself as saying, “If you’re going to cover my personal life, then we’re welcome to do the same around here.”
Conway also provided background about her husband and his feud with President Trump, noting that it is “unusual … for a man to gain newfound fame and power through his wife, following his own storied, decades-long career.” She asserted that she and her husband “disagree on many big things and agree on many big things” but that “exactly none of it is anyone’s business.”

Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon released a statement about the incident earlier on Thursday, writing, “Off the record conversations are agreed in good faith and in advance between people known to be participating. They are not, and never have been, blanket coverage to shield people who pull a bait and switch, peremptorily enter the conversation, and then spend ten minutes abusing, bullying and threatening a reporter. Other organizations may agree to be played for saps, but the Washington Examiner won’t.”
