(Newser) – Republicans might be dismayed to discover that a former illegal immigrant with a history of drug use has become an American citizen—for the purpose of voting against President Trump. Canadian rocker Neil Young, who has lived in California for most of the last 54 years, was granted US citizenship and obtained his naturalization documents in Los Angeles Wednesday, with wife Daryl Hannah present, reports Rolling Stone. His citizenship was delayed in November after he answered honestly about past marijuana use on his application.
“I’m happy to report I’m in,” the 74-year-old said on his website, sharing a photo of himself standing next to an American flag and a sign saying “Democrats Register to Vote Here.” Young, who was born in Toronto and grew up in Winnipeg, moved to Los Angeles in 1966 after crossing the border in a Pontiac hearse, claiming he was driving to Vancouver via the US, but didn’t get a green card until 1970. Young, now a dual citizen, shared a video on Instagram in which he waves a mini-flag with the Stars and Stripes on one side and the Maple Leaf on the other, People reports. “I’m proud to be a Canerican,” he sings. (Hours after Trump launched his campaign in 2015, Young told him to stop using his song.)
