(Newser) – The Diamond Princess cruise ship is now a floating quarantine center—and the only passengers who will be allowed back on land in the next 14 days will be sick ones. Japanese authorities said Wednesday that at least 10 people on the ship have tested positive, and only 300 of the 3,700 passengers and crew have been tested so far, the BBC reports. The patients were taken to hospitals Wednesday from the ship, which arrived in Yokohama Monday. Authorities decided to quarantine the ship after it arrived because a passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus.

Diamond Princess passengers say they have been told to remain in their cabins. The death toll in mainland China, where the outbreak again, jumped to 490 on Wednesday, with more than 20,000 confirmed cases, the AP reports. In Hong Kong, where thousands of medical staff have gone on strike, demanding that the border be closed, authorities announced Wednesday that all people entering the territory from mainland China will be quarantined for 14 days.
