People in King County that fell behind on their April rent could get some relief from a program offering rental assistance to thousands of households impacted by the spread of the novel coronavirus.

United Way of King County, along with King County and Seattle officials, announced Friday a $5 million investment to adapt its Home Base Program, which has in the past provided rental assistance to prevent people from being evicted. The program will now help provide funds for households making at or below 50% of the area median income who are behind on their April rent as a result of impacts from the COVID-19 outbreak.

It comes as thousands of people across the region have lost their jobs due to measures put into place to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. The state has seen drastic spikes in people applying for unemployment insurance over the past few weeks, and residents have expressed concerns over being able to pay for rent and other basic necessities without a stable income.

Gordon McHenry, Jr., president and CEO of United Way of King County, said the organization expects the funds will be able to serve up to 2,000 households to help people make their rent and stabilize their housing.
