Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost settles with Texas firm that processed payments for robocallers – By Jim Woods (The Columbus Dispatch) / June 10 2020
A Texas business has agreed that it will no longer process payments to settle allegations that it assisted robocall scammers in fraudulently collecting millions of dollars, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Thursday.
The settlement reached with Madera Merchant Services LLC and its operators, Bruce Woods, Patricia Woods and Victor Rodriguez, is the result of a joint complaint filed in 2019 by the Ohio Attorney General’s office and the Federal Trade Commission.
The action is part of the Ohio Attorney General’s push against robocall companies. On Tuesday, Yost joined five other attorneys general in a lawsuit against two Texas businesses accused of being behind billions of illegal robocalls, including 59 million calls in Ohio.
“The people who handle the money are just as culpable as the ones who do the bad acts,” Yost said. “We promised to go after every link in the deceptive robocall chain, and we’re making good on it.”
