The president warned of life in Joe Biden’s America and directed his ire at racial justice protesters as his supporters chanted ‘four more years.’
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP painted a dire picture of America under Democratic rule, casting the choice this November as one to protect the “American way of life” or to give in to “a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it.”
In a nomination acceptance speech that presaged the president’s strategy as he enters the final months of his struggling campaign, Trump told a crowd of cheering supporters – sitting shoulder to shoulder and mostly maskless – that “no one will be safe” if Democratic nominee Joe Biden prevails.
“Your vote will decide whether we protect law-abiding Americans or whether we give free reign to violent anarchists, agitators and criminals who threaten our citizens,” Trump said.
The president’s speech was filled with self-congratulatory remarks about his record on trade, jobs, foreign policy and other matters. In a stunning display of partisan political activity on White House grounds, Trump, flanked by massive “Trump-Pence” campaign signs, chose the South Lawn to accept the Republican nomination for president, ignoring complaints that the move violated federal law. After his speech – which, according to a C-SPAN accounting of past nomination acceptance speeches, was the longest in modern history – fireworks spelling out TRUMP 2020 exploded in the sky behind the Washington Monument.
