Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Signals U.S. Border Will Stay Closed – By Alexa Lardieri (US News) / Dec 1 2020
The restrictions were first put in place in March as COVID-19 spread, and the prime minister says the virus will have to be ‘significantly more under control’ before they’re lifted.
CANADA WILL NOT LIFT the ban on non-essential travel with the U.S. until the coronavirus pandemic has significantly been brought under control.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that the ban on travel between the two countries will likely last well into next year. The restrictions were first put in place in March as COVID-19 began to spread and it has been extended every month since.
The non-essential travel ban does not affect trade.
“Until the virus is significantly more under control everywhere around the world, we’re not going to be releasing the restrictions at the border,” Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. “We are incredibly lucky that trade in essential goods – in agricultural products, in pharmaceuticals – is flowing back and forth as it always has. It’s just not people traveling, which I think is the important thing.”
According to health officials, the U.S. has more than 13.56 million cases of COVID-19 and more than 268,660 people have died, while Canada has more than 383,080 cases and more than 12,180 people have died.
