Biden Signs COVID-19 Relief Bill Into Law – By Lisa Hagen (US News) / Mar 11 2021

The legislation includes extending unemployment benefits and stimulus checks but not a minimum wage hike.

PRESIDENT Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill into law on Thursday, marking his first legislative victory halfway through his first 100 days in office.

From the Oval Office, Biden signed the American Rescue Plan just a few days before enhanced federal unemployment benefits were set to run out. The president vowed to push for additional COVID-19 relief in the early days of his presidency, though some of his initial priorities, like a $15 minimum wage hike, were ultimately stripped from the bill.

In addition to extending the $300-a-week unemployment benefits until Sept. 6, the sweeping rescue package provides $1,400 stimulus checks for individuals earning under $75,000, increased child tax credits and additional funding for small businesses.

The bill also includes a number of provisions aimed to improve health care and curb the spread of the virus, allocating billions of dollars to expand testing and vaccine operations and help for reopening schools.
