Toledo exploring ‘all legal avenues’ to contesting 2020 census – By Brooks Sutherland (The Blade) / Aug 18 2021
The City of Toledo is exploring “all legal avenues” it has to contest the official count of the 2020 census, a spokesman for Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed Wednesday.
Preliminary census data released last week showed the city has continued a half-century decline in population, again losing 16,500 people from 2010 to 2020. The federal count suggests Toledo’s population dropped from 287,357 to 270,871 during that time period.
But the city has concerns the census may have undercounted Toledo, largely in part due to the challenges associated with the pandemic, spokesman Ignazio Messina said in a statement.
“Our team has been discussing the possibility of challenging the results for months,” Mr. Messina said. “Cities are not allowed to formally challenge results until 2022, but the mayor has already directed the law department to explore all legal avenues of contesting the official count as determined by the 2020 census.”
