Biden economic adviser: rising food prices normal if you don’t count beef, pork, and poultry – By W. James Antle III (Washington Examiner) / Sept 8 2021
One of President Joe Biden’s top economists told reporters at a White House briefing on Wednesday that grocery prices are normal if you exclude beef, pork, and poultry.
National Economic Council Director Brian Deese appeared at the briefing alongside Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to tout the Biden administration’s initiative to lower rising meat prices amid widespread concerns about inflation more generally.
“About half of the overall increase in grocery prices can be attributed to a significant increase in prices in three products: in beef, in pork, and in poultry. And in beef and in pork, we’ve seen double-digit increases in prices over the last couple of months,” Deese said. He added, “If you take out those three categories, we’ve actually seen price increases that are more in line with historical norms.”
Deese went on to note lower egg prices. Beef, pork, and poultry are the major meat products.
