Rallies in support of death row inmate Pervis Payne held across Tennessee and country – By Katherine Burgess (Memphis Commercial Appeal) / Sept 8 2021
A crowd of more than 70 split across four street corners at Union and McLean, cheering as cars honked, waving signs that said “Justice for Pervis Payne” and “NO EXECUTIONS.”
The group wasn’t alone.
Rallies occurred across Tennessee and the nation, including in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, Washington D.C. and other cities, according to a news release.
“It means people are now being more aware of Pervis Payne, about the case,” said Andre Johnson, organizer of the weekly Memphis rallies. “They know something fishy went on, something just doesn’t seem right. It also means the people out here are committed to seeing justice happen, to seeing a wrong made right.”
