As Texas abortion ban proceeds, Oregon congressional delegation unites in defense of women’s reproductive rights – By Michael Russell (The Oregonian/OregonLive) / Oct 9 2021
Members of Oregon’s congressional delegation presented a united front in defense of women’s reproductive rights during a news conference Saturday at Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette’s headquarters in Northeast Portland.
One day after a federal appeals court allowed Texas to resume banning most abortions, Democratic U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and Representatives Suzanne Bonamici and Earl Blumenauer gave speeches along with Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette staffers, including CEO Anne Udoll.
The delegation decided to come together in response to Friday’s federal appeals court ruling that reinstated a Texas bill considered the most restrictive abortion law in the U.S., Wyden said.
Texas abortion clinics on Saturday canceled appointments they had booked during a 48-hour reprieve from the law, Senate Bill 8, which bans abortions once cardiac activity is detected, usually around six weeks, before some women know they are pregnant. The law makes no exceptions in cases of rape or incest.
