    312 Roman Emperor Constantine the Great is said to have received his famous Vision of the Cross

    1553 Michael Servetus, who discovered the pulmonary circulation of the blood, is burned for heresy in Switzerland.

    1659 William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson became the first Quakers to be executed in America.

    1787 The first of the Federalist Papers, which called for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, was published.

    1795 Pinckney’s Treaty [Treaty of San Lorenzo] signed by Spain and US, establishing the southern boundary of the US and giving Americans right to navigate the Mississippi River

      1838 State of Missouri Passes the Extermination Order
    Governor Lilburn Boggs signed Missouri Executive Order 44 as a result of the Battle of Crooked River which took place a few days earlier on October 24-25. The fight occurred between Mormon forces and a Missouri state militia and it resulted in 4 fatalities. The executive order ruled that ‘all Mormons were to be treated as enemies and that they must be exterminated or driven out of the state for public peace.’ The order forced members of the Church of Latter Day Saints to migrate from Missouri to Illinois.

    1871 Boss Tweed (William Macy Tweed), Democratic leader of Tammany Hall, arrested after NY Times exposed his corruption

    1878 The Manhattan Savings Bank in New York City was robbed of over $3,000,000. The robbery was credited to George “Western” Leslie even though there was not enough evidence to convict him, only two of his associates were convicted.

    1891 D. B. Downing, inventor, is awarded a patent for the street letter (mail) box.

    1921 A senate committee is advising that the United States changes to the metric system of weights and measures as it is now used by 37 countries against the Imperial weights and measure system used in just 12 countries

    1962 Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev offers to remove Soviet missile bases in Cuba if the U.S. removes its missile bases in Turkey.

    2008 US Alaskan Senator Stevens found guilty of lying about gifts worth $250,000 he received from the oil company Veco.

    2008 The FBI working with local law enforcement has arrested 642 in 29 cities in the United States in a crackdown on Child prostitute rings, rescuing 47 children ranging in age from 13 to 17.
