Report links fraudulent Michigan election petition signatures to 36 circulators, 1 company – By Paul Egan (Detroit Free Press) / May 24, 2022
LANSING – Who is behind the widespread signature fraud that threatens the candidacies of five Republican candidates for governor, plus candidates for other Michigan offices?
A Monday report from the Bureau of Elections names 30 signature petition circulators accused of submitting fraudulent signatures impacting at least 10 campaigns, and identifies six others accused of forging signatures that impacted only a single campaign.
But the report also, through a footnote with a link to a news article, points to a company headed by a Michigan man, Shawn Wilmoth, of Warren, being connected with the improper signatures.
The report does not name Wilmoth, but says “the head of the firm” involved in fraudulent signatures was convicted of two counts of election fraud in 2011. That sentence has a footnote with a link to a 2021 article from Florida that names Wilmoth and First Choice Contracting LLC.
