The New Orleans City Council on Thursday created new rules that will allow restaurants and bars to seat customers on the street and other public property facing their businesses, cementing a pandemic-era practice aimed at keeping businesses open with outdoor seating.
The idea of making “parklets” a permanent feature of the New Orleans drinking and dining scene initially did not sit well with some residents in high-traffic areas where they have sprouted up over the last two years.
But a series of restrictions added to the initial proposal from Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration appeared to mollify opponents, and the measure passed unanimously.
