    A gallon of gas in Mexico costs less than a dollar, while Texans are paying nearly $3.90 per gallon across the state, even as prices have fallen since their early June peak.

    Americans are crossing the Texas-Mexico border to buy gas at in unprecedented numbers as U.S. gas prices continue hovering around record highs, Bloomberg reported Monday.

    A gallon of gas currently costs less than $1 U.S. dollar in Mexico, according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, soaring gas prices in Texas and across the U.S. have Americans scrambling to keep their cars fueled: after hitting a record high price of $4.34 for a gallon of regular unleaded on June 2, prices have gone down some—but Texans are still paying $3.82 a gallon on average about three weeks later.

    “For their whole lives, people here–businessmen and everyone else–have gone to buy gas in El Paso,” Ivan Escondido, who pumps gas in Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, told Bloomberg. “Now the tables have turned.”
