As MPs mark Queen’s death, Bloc leader Blanchet calls for end of monarchy – By Ryan Tumilty (National Post) / Sept 15, 2022

Blanchet paid condolences to the Queen’s family, but said his MPs would not take part in the tributes, noting Quebec’s history with the monarchy was ‘thorny and cruel’

OTTAWA — MPs in Ottawa paid tribute to her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II Thursday, but at least one party leader argued it’s time Canadians have a discussion about moving past the monarchy.

All parties spoke in the chamber during a special session on Thursday with tributes expected to continue until Friday. MPs, most dressed in black, were able to give speeches marking the Queen’s legacy, with some speaking about their own encounters, while others simply spoke about her long reign.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Queen had been a model of public service.

“Many words have been used to describe the qualities that mark the legacy of her majesty, words like duty, service, devotion,” he said. “For her majesty, public service this entire life, right up until the very end. She had an unflinching, enduring commitment to service to building a better world, a better future.”
