Trump Supporters Burn MAGA Caps Over DACA Amnesty – By Pritha Paul (ibtimes.com) / Sept 15 2017
Videos of Trump supporters burning their “Make America Great Again” caps to a crisp in protest of the president striking a deal regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) with Democratic leaders flooded Twitter on Friday.
People who voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 elections took to Twitter to post videos where they set fire to red caps that bore Trump’s campaign slogan, with hashtags like “AmnestyDon,” “BurnMyMAGAHat,” “BuildTheWall” and “GoGetHimMueller.”
While some simply set their MAGA caps on fire, others came up with more innovative ways of disposing of their caps like throwing it into the garbage chute.
Anti-Trump protesters, on the other hand, gleefully took advantage of the President’s supporters turning against him and posted memes and tweets mocking his apparent downfall.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and New York senator Chuck Schumer had dinner with Trump on Wednesday after which they released a joint statement that insinuated that they had reached an amicable decision regarding the issue of DACA. “We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” the statement said, reported several news outlets.
Soon after, the White House did not confirm or deny that any agreement had been reached during the dinner between the leaders. In regard to the areas of discussion, it read: “These topics included tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade. This is a positive step toward the president’s strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans.”
Similar sentiments were echoed by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders when she tweeted: “While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.”
Even though Trump himself took to Twitter to assure his followers that he did not strike a deal with democratic leaders during dinner, it did not help. “No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote,” he tweeted.
To make matters worse, Trump clarified that the promise of building the border wall between U.S. and Mexico had been reduced to “renovation of old and existing fences and walls.”
“The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built,” he tweeted.
The main backlash from his supporters started after Trump posted the following tweets, which displayed an empathetic attitude toward the very “Dreamers” he was in favor of deporting throughout his presidential campaign. The tweet was posted on Thursday. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump
According to Breitbart, an outlet that has always had Trump’s back, the cap-burning might be a strong indication of the president losing out on his support-base fast.
According to a New York Times reporter following the outrage among Trump’s followers, his campaign sent out an email to the reporters that read: “There’s been a lot of noise today and a lot of rumors. Let me set the record straight. We will build a wall, (not a fence) along the Southern border of the United States of America to help stop illegal immigration and keep America safe.”
