Uber Eats Launches Its First Pot Delivery Service – By Rob Quinn (Newser) / Oct 17, 2022

Toronto program is a world first, company says

(NEWSER) – Pot smokers in Canada’s biggest city might now be calling Uber Eats long before they get the munchies. In what the company says is a world first, it is partnering with cannabis marketplace Leafly for home cannabis delivery in Toronto, Engadget reports. “This is the first time cannabis delivery will be available on a major third-party delivery platform in the world,” Uber Eats said in a statement on Sunday, the day before the fourth anniversary of Canada-wide full legalization of marijuana. Uber Eats says people who order cannabis via the app will have it delivered by the staff of one of Leafly’s approval retailers, who will check the buyers’ level of sobriety and verify that they are over 19, the legal age to buy both alcohol and cannabis in Ontario.

Uber Eats customers have been able to use the app for cannabis pick-up orders since last November. The province first allowed retailers to deliver cannabis to customers early in the pandemic under a temporary change that was made permanent in March. Uber Eats says the new program will help keep stoned drivers off the road. “First and foremost, we see this as a critical piece to helping discourage impaired driving, and secondly, this is just another initiative that can help combat the illegal cannabis market, which still makes up more than 40% of cannabis sales in Ontario today,” Lola Kassim, Uber Eats Canada’s general manager, tells the CBC.
