Study: 1,800% increase in California seniors going to ER after cannabis use – By Lester Black (SFGATE) / Jan 11, 2023
Certain Californians are getting high and ending up in the emergency department way more often than they used to, and it might not be the ones you think. Cannabis-related visits for Californians over 65 increased by more than 1,800% between 2005 and 2019, according to a new study from the University of California San Diego.
Dr. Benjamin Han, a geriatric medicine specialist at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and the lead author on the paper, said the study should be a warning to older people that using cannabis does have risks.
“We don’t often think about older people using drugs but they do, and these numbers are increasing sharply,” Han said.
Han added that many older patients react poorly to the cannabis products they find on the legal market.
